Frequently asked questions about our hammam towels

A hamam towel is a (usually) cotton cloth with fringes traditionally used in Turkish bath houses. The special cotton makes it convenient to wrap around and dry off, as they absorb moisture well. The cloth dries quickly afterwards. Today, hamam towels are used for all kinds of purposes. They are beautiful, but also very lightweight to take with you when traveling, to the beach, to the boat, to the spa, etc. The size of the cloths is standard 100 x 170 cm, excluding the fringes. Of course, there are also different sizes (for example, 100x185cm or XL size of 215 x 160 cm).

Our hamam bathrobes (and kimonos) for women and men are made from hamam towels. So they are made of the same absorbent cotton, hand-woven and 100% fair trade. Therefore, our hamam bathrobes and kimonos are also lighter and thinner than most standard bathrobes. Ideal if you are looking for a thin bathrobe for going to the sauna or on vacation. We are constantly working on new designs. We have them in kimono-style, short and long or extra large for the big men. Often also with matching hamam towels.

Right! No problem at all! A hamam towel is made of absorbent cotton (similar to hydrophilic cotton) and therefore absorbs a lot of moisture. So it is great for drying off with.

In fact, all hamam towels are great for use as lightweight beach towels or bath towels on vacation. If you go with a family, the double-woven hamam towels Kolibri, Turtle, Ibar and Reza are very nice. Each family member then takes their own color! They are also very affordable. We also have extra long hammam towels for men, such as the Sol or Dilan models.

Of course, you then choose a super light hamam towel, which can withstand a beating. The best choice in our eyes then is the hamam towel Sol, Turtle or Zanzi. But other choices are also good (for example, Fouta Playa, Sousse, Casablanca, Biarritz).

In fact, almost all hamam towels or foutas are very suitable as lightweight beach towels or bath towels on vacation. But if you want the very lightest hamam towel, choose a Sol, Ibiza, Turtle or Zanzi hamam towel.

The longest hamam towels are Sol (2m) and Dilan (2.10). All sizes of the hamam towels are listed excluding tassels.

Yes, ZusenZomer also has a hammam towel made of terry cloth, for example the hammam towel MIX, durable particularly beautiful and woven from residual yarns. We also have hammam towels with terry cloth on the back, these are the so-called Kikoys. The mentioned hammam towels with(of) terry cloth are a lot less light than the standard collection.

A fouta is basically a hamam towel from Tunisia. These cloths are often a bit longer (190 cm) than the hamam towels. A fouta is made of absorbent cotton and therefore very suitable as a lightweight bath towel, hand towel or beach towel. They are also great to use as wraps. Read more>>

A kikoy is a universal beach towel, or shawl originating in Kenya. They are double-sided. One side of cotton, usually with bright colors, and on the other side thin terry cloth. This feels nice and soft and is also good for drying off. Just like the hamam towels, you can use them for everything. They are a bit smaller (160 cm long) and a bit heavier than the hamam towels.

The weight of hamam towels is different for each cloth. The standard hamam towels(100x170 to 100x210) vary from 300 grams to 450 grams. The XL sizes (Storm, Casablanca and Ibiza) vary from 500 to 700 grams. The weight of the hamam towels or our other cloths is listed in the product description.

You can wash the hamam towels and hamam bathrobes at 30 degrees. The cotton may shrink slightly. Be sure to wash colored items separately. It is advisable to wash new hamam towels and foutas before use so that the cotton absorbs moisture better. The hamam towels and robes dry very quickly on the line and do not become ¨hard¨ like normal towels. Rather not put them in the dryer because that causes more shrinking due to the high temperatures. In the end, everything dries very quickly anyway. Many of our hamam towels and bathrobes are hand-knotted at the bottom, so we recommend checking (tightening) the buttons before the first wash to make sure they do not come loose. This is only necessary for the first wash.

It is not necessary to iron the hamam towels. Ironing the hamam towel or fouta makes it less absorbent. If you hang the hamam towel neatly on the clothesline and then fold it neatly, that's enough.

We do recommend ironing the bathrobes and kimonos (slightly). They are not that prone to creasing because of the supple cotton, so it's not too bad!

In an artisanal and traditional way, the production of hamam towels and bathrobes by ZusenZomer takes place at small family farms in Turkey and Tunisia. We work together on the basis of 100% Fair Trade. Traditionally, this is where these products come from. The quality is therefore exceptionally good. This distinguishes ZusenZomer from other large suppliers of (cheap) hamam towels, which usually import these products from India and China.

All sizes listed in the webshop do not include the tassels. So the tassels are not included when measuring the hamam towels or bathrobes. Please note that sometimes there may be some size differences because it is a handmade product.
